Clint & Vera's Flute Workshop Map

Our main Native American flute workshops are Flute Harvest (October in CA) and the Zion Canyon Native Flute School (March in UT). Most of our other workshops are shorter experiences — great fun and a chance to grow and play … but do not have some of the elements such as individually customized programs and concerts that happen at Flute Harvest and Zion.

Flute Harvest and Zion are quite different:

  • Flute Harvest is a retreat that provides a small group of 20 participants with an individually customized program designed to enhance flute playing skills and musicality.
  • Zion is our musical playground with a decade of developed facilities and activities and five facilitators on staff.

Sign up for our Flute NewsletterBoth events have participant concerts and (of course) all our events have a humanistic approach to music-making.

We hope you can join us!

Entertaining Science: Turning Breath into Music
Clint Goss and Sylvain Leroux

For at least 2,000 generations, we have used flutes to convert our breath into vibrating columns of air that get inside each other’s heads, and please us. How does that happen? Computer scientist and flute scholar Clint Goss will get inside those instruments – their physics, psycho-acoustics, and the ethereal musical connection that carries the emotional content. Breath into MusicWe'll hear the direct descendants of early flutes, from tiny bone flutes to three-meter behemoths that reach for the bottom of what can be heard.

Among the newest members of the flute family is the “chromatic tambin”, recently developed by New York jazz musician Sylvain Leroux while crafting traditional tambins (a.k.a. the “Fula flute”) the national flute of Guinea, West Africa. He returned to Guinea to teach the new instrument to children, and will show films of their performances. Sylvain will explain how this new version of a classic instrument provides new means for musical expression within a traditional context.
